Can You Stand It?: Should Shockwave Finally Go Floorless?

Picture the scene. In 1994, the golden age of Intamin coaster building was in full swing. A new fad became apparent of rollercoasters that instead of sitting down... You can stand!

Everybody wanted a piece of this action, and so a hop, skip and a jump later... The coaster 'Shockwave' arrived in old Blighty at Drayton Manor!

Let's get real here. 'Shockwave' is a solid coaster, with a unique layout, staggering height of 120ft, 4 inversions and all at speeds of over 50 mph, you can't say this isn't anything short of impressive.

But here lies the problem, many enthusiasts and fans alike have been complaining for years that the standing restraints are just too uncomfortable, leaving many guests simply wanting to skip the ride entirety during their visit.

While some like the standing format, claiming it's unique to the nation, others have been demanding that it needs to be converted into a floorless coaster.

We have seen other examples of this happing in parks all over the world. Most noticeably Six Flag's Stand Up B&M 'Apocalypse' being converted and re-branded to the (now floorless) coaster 'Firebird'.

So would it work for Drayton Manor?

Well I wanted to share 3 reasons why I personally think 'Shockwave' going floorless could be a great move for fans and the park combined.

( Please remember these are just my thoughts, in no way am I speaking for Drayton Manor or any of it's affiliated companies.
Not everyone will agree and that's what makes being part of the coaster community amazing, debate and discussion. )

So Let's have a natter shall we?!...

1). Pure Delight and Enjoyment

So, this could be seen as a little obvious, but without the standing restraints, there would be no uncomfortable riding.

Yes, finally fans would get to jump on the coaster without the fear of going through any pain whatsoever!

Happy Riders, Happy Coaster, Happy Park. Simple.

2). Longevity

If the coaster went through a train transformation it would in turn give 'Shockwave' some additional longevity to it's life!

Newer trains would mean for a smoother ride and coasting experience, one that could be enjoyed for many years into the future!

Let's face it, with the current stand up restraints, some enthusiasts have been left wondering how long 'Shockwave' has left!

3). Re-Branding Bonanza!

By making the seating arrangements change to the coaster, it would in turn change the ride experience, so the park could use this to their advantage.

With the year everyone has had, shiny new investments are going to be less likely... But changing up the trains, colour scheme, theming and perhaps a new lick of paint to the track, could be a great investment for the future.

It would secure the ride, keep the iconic track logo relevant for the park's branding and bring new visitors to the park...

Wrap Up:

So I have to say, personally, I am on 'Team Floorless'! ( if there ever was such a team! )
